DAR ES SALAAM, January 3, 2013: The Association of Journalists Against
AIDS in Tanzania (AJAAT) in collaboration with the Tanzania Commission for AIDS
(TACAIDS) is announcing a media competition on HIV and AIDS Prevention focusing
on Youths and Women. This activity is being supported by the United Nations
Population Fund (UNFPA)

Entitled: MEDIA COMPETITION ON THE
EFFECTS AND PREVENTION EFFORTS OF HIV/AIDS TO YOUTH AND WOMEN, the
competition aims to harmonize the media to write more about the impacts
of HIV and AIDS to youths and women and what should be done to prevent the two
groups from new infections of the virus for the betterments of the families and
the nation as a whole.
The competition that will lasts for three months—from December
31th 2012 to March 31th, 2013—will involve local journalists
from print (newspapers), electronic (radio and TVs) and new media (bloggers).
Strategically, the competition aims to enable the community members to
recognize and motivate it to focus on the efforts that will enable the nation
achieving its ambitious plan of bringing new HIV infections to Zero by 2015.
This intervention is part of the activities of the United Nations Development
Assistance Plan for Tanzania (UNDAP 2011-2015) in the annual work plan of the
UN Programme Working Group for HIV & AIDS.
The
contents of the features or items or programmes to be accepted in the
competition should largely focus on how HIV/AIDS has affected youths and women
(economically, socially and in terms of their health status).
The
information should, for example, show or highlight important issues for HIV
prevention among the youths and women,
care & support for youths or women living with HIV and AIDS (PLHIV), as
well as treatment (in terms of re-infection), family integration, resource
mobilization, research and knowledge management.

It should
state why the two groups continue to be the most vulnerable to HIV and AIDS in
the country and what the causes are. The features or programmes or items
should, therefore, propose or suggest or highlight methods and ways to enhance
HIV prevention programmes targeting women and youths.
2.0 ELIGIBILITY AND CRITERIONS:
- Participants to the competition are all the media practitioners in the
country, or foreigners working for the Tanzania media.
- Items or entries allowed to be submitted include, features articles,
TV documentaries, Radio programmes, cartoons, photographs and blog reports
- The entries must focus or target issues such
as stigma and discrimination, why women and young people are more vulnerable,
challenges met by women and young people to access HIV information, services
and support and should be detailed with adequate educative information
- The features or items should specifically focus or target the society
of Tanzania
- It should be original, and not copied from any other publications,
i.e. Newsletter, Magazine, Newspaper, TV, Radio Programmes, blogs, etc.
- It should have appeared in the media from December 31th 2012 to March 31th, 2013.
- Languages accepted are Kiswahili or English.
- Only original clippings or items will be accepted.
- Submission is restricted to up three different (3) entries per
journalist.
- Deadline for submission is April 7th 2013
- Different attractive prizes and certificates will be offered to the
winners to be selected by professional judges from media and HIV/AIDS and
Health circles
